About the role

We are looking for caring, compassionate and proactive support workers to join the team supporting a 68-year-old gentleman living with Huntington’s Disease in his Wynnum home. This is a 24/7 Supported Independent Living (SIL) setting, with 8-hour shifts and sleepover shifts available across the week. Penalty rates apply for evenings, weekends, public holidays and sleepovers in line with the SCHADS Award.

Both male and female support workers are welcome to apply.

About our participant

Our participant is a kind, easy-going man who values consistency, patience and a calm approach to his daily routine. Huntington’s Disease affects his movement, communication and daily living tasks, so he requires support workers who are observant, gentle and confident in providing hands-on care while still respecting his independence and choice.

What you’ll be doing

  • Providing personal care, including showering, dressing and toileting
  • Mealtime support, including meal preparation and assistance with eating and drinking (mindful of swallowing changes common with Huntington’s)
  • Medication prompts and administration as per his support plan
  • Mobility support and safe transfers, with awareness of involuntary movements
  • Supporting him with hobbies, social activities and community access
  • Domestic duties – laundry, cleaning, tidying his home
  • Accurate documentation – shift notes, progress notes and incident reports
  • Sleepover shifts and overnight responsiveness as required

About you

  • Caring, compassionate and proactive – you anticipate needs rather than wait to be asked
  • Patient, calm and respectful, especially when communication takes time
  • Reliable, punctual and committed to consistency for the participant
  • Clear spoken English is essential due to the participant’s communication needs
  • Comfortable working independently in a home setting
  • Physically able to support safe transfers and personal care

Essential requirements

  • Previous experience as a support worker in the NDIS or disability sector
  • NDIS Worker Screening Check (or willingness to obtain)
  • Working with Children Check / Blue Card (QLD)
  • Current First Aid & CPR certificate
  • Australian driver’s licence and reliable, registered, insured vehicle
  • Right to work in Australia
  • Comfortable using a smartphone for shift notes and rostering

Highly regarded

  • Previous experience supporting someone with Huntington’s Disease or another progressive neurological condition (e.g. Parkinson’s, MND, MS)
  • Certificate III or IV in Individual Support, Disability or related field
  • Training in manual handling, medication administration, mealtime management and dysphagia support
  • NDIS New Worker Orientation Module completed

What we offer

  • Pay in line with SCHADS, plus penalty rates for evenings, weekends, public holidays and sleepovers
  • Stable, ongoing 8-hour shifts in a SIL home – no constant travel between clients
  • Ongoing training and professional development, including condition-specific training
  • Supportive team culture with regular supervision and debriefing
  • The opportunity to build a long-term, meaningful relationship with the participant and his family
